Welcome to The Herodotian!
We are a student-led history magazine based at the University of Oxford. Founded in the summer of 2025, we aim to provide a platform for a wide range of ideas, discussions and debate within the field of History, accepting submissions from all students under a termly theme which can be found on the homepage of this website. The Herodotian is a proudly free-speech, nonpartisan publication. Opinions expressed in articles are those of the individual writers only and do not reflect the views of the Herodotian.
The Herodotian is, however, more than just about history. Art, culture, philosophy, science, politics, literature, anthropology, and more naturally branch off this Yggdrasil. What may begin as an exploration into a dusty corner of the past might just produce a long thread that binds us to the present day alongside all its trials and tumults. The question of what is history has stumped even the greatest minds for millennia, and it is not something we are going to pretend we know the answer to. This works to a writer’s benefit. Whether it be an ancient fable which has its finer details lost in the thick goo of mankind’s forgetfulness, or a contemporary development of yesterday, all recollections are welcome in the Herodotian.
The Herodotian is a constantly-evolving project, and we are continuously looking for talent - including Junior Editors for both articles and art/web. If you would like more information on this, please contact us through our e-mail.
Please send all submissions and enquiries to editors@theherodotian.com. Happy writing!
